本片讲述的是两个出身低下的女孩——桑德列娜和纳塔莉，借助她们身为女子的诱惑力，以最快的速度到达了这个等级社会的高层。最终她们被一个纵欲的纨绔子弟操纵，他以她们的痛苦为乐事。
导演布里索说在他的电影里，总是自己向自己提出道德与法律之间的问题。然而在《秘密事件》里，又涉及到性的问题。布里索曾以“新古典主义”的唯美的影像风格征服观众，而在这部“社会情色悲剧”中，这种风格还带着一些希区柯克式的悬疑味道。
